Know Your Pieces

In Poseidon's Rising, each player has a set of six pieces: three heroes, two boats, and one turtle. The heroes are moved around the board to rescue hostages and defeat monsters. The boats are used to move the heroes from island to island, and the turtle can be used as a ferry between two close-by islands or as a means of transport for passengers and goods.

Movement & Turns

Each turn in Poseidon's Rising consists of three phases: movement, actions, and end of turn effects. During the movement phase, you can move any number of your pieces up to their maximum movement value. Boats can move any number of spaces along shorelines but cannot enter the sea; heroes can move one space at a time in any direction, including through water; and the turtle can move up to four spaces in any direction. There are six possible actions: attack (either melee or ranged), cast a spell, use an item, fetch a hostage, enter into combat with a monster, or explore an island. At the end of your turn, regardless of whether you moved any pieces or took any actions, all monsters currently on the board will take one action per round until they are defeated or flee from combat.

Rescuing Hostages & Defeating Monsters

Saving hostages is key to scoring points in Poseidon's Rising. There are three types of hostages: civilians , priests , and sirens . Civilians are worth 1 point each when rescued; priests are worth 3 points each; and sirens are worth 5 points each. In order to rescue a hostage, you must first enter into combat with the monster guarding them. Once defeated, you simply pick up the hostage and bring it back to your home base (marked by a flag on the board). When scoring points at the end of the game, rescued hostages are counted as if they were gathered treasures . Defeating monsters also scores points; however, these points are awarded immediately rather than at game's end. The amount of points scored depends on the strength (indicated by stars) of the monster defeated relative to your hero's strength rating (indicated by numbers). For example, if your hero has a strength rating of 3 and defeats a monster with a strength rating of 2, then you would score 5 points (3 + 2 = 5). If your hero has a strength rating of 1 and defeats a monster with a strength rating of 4 then you would only score 3 points (1 + 4 = 5).
